Recording of the confernece is available in English on this page and in Estonian here.

The 30-month partnership project between the Estonian National Heritage Board and the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren), named “Historic Town Centres Revitalised Through Heritage-led Local Development”,  focuses on heritage conservation areas in small towns. The aim of the cooperation project is to increase the awareness of the role and potential urban cultural heritage has for local identity. As well as finding ways in which urban cultural heritage contributes to the cultural and economic development of towns. The project focuses on the role of community in revitalising towns, sustainable practices in development of cultural environments, opportunities created by seasonality and the possibility of new uses in towns with shrinking populations.

The conference in Lihula is aimed at local governments, communities and a wider circle of stakeholders interested in development based on urban heritage, opportunities of the circular economy in revitalising heritage environments and capacity building. The aim of the conference is to start a cross-sectoral dialogue, to inspire and support networking between participants and countries involved. Among other things, we ask what is the added value of operating in a historic environment? What are the biggest challenges in revitalising small towns? And how to support the sustainable development of towns with declining populations?

The first day of the two-day conference will be available for viewing online and include synchronised translation.
